We had a lovely afternoon celebrating the Royal Wedding in the sunshine thanks to the wonderful PTA. The children had party food followed by an icecream and an extra playtime!

Today we had a Design and Technology Challenge day. We read the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff, then discussed which materials we would use to make a bridge. Mrs Choppin then set the challenge of making a bridge using only newspaper and masking tape. The bridge had to span the gap of 50 cms between two tables.
We started off by investigating different ways of making the paper stronger. We tried twisting, rolling, scrunching and folding the newspaper to see which method would be the best.
After our investigation time, we had a look at some pictures of bridges to help inspire our own designs, we found that lots of the bridges had both straight lines and curves in them to provide support and strength.
We then set about designing our own bridges, we drew our ideas out and labelled them so we knew which method of folding or rolling we wanted to use for each part of the bridge.
Then the time to make them finally arrived. We tried to follow our designs as best we could to produce a bridge strong enough to span the gap between the tables. We used lots of newspapers and masking tape and left lots of finger prints all over the tables!
After a quick tidy up, we took it in turns to show the rest of the class that our bridges were successful and they could support themselves.
To finish off we had a discussion about which parts of the bridge were hard to make and why our designs were successful or not.
All in all we had a great day designing and making our bridges. Have a look at the pictures below to see our designing, making and evaluating.

I set the children the challenge of making a periscope as part of our work about light. The class worked in small groups and had to use their teamwork skills to solve the problem. The hardest part was trying to alter the angle of the mirrors to have a good view of the classroom rather than the ceiling!
Here are some pictures of the children ‘having a go’ at making their periscopes.

Six lucky year six pupils were selected to attend an Enterprise day to design, promote and produce a product. ‘Watcome Marvellous Muffins’ were created with a logo, advertising poster, packaging and costings. The majority of the ingredients were Fairtrade and the children even got to sample their finished product!
Shannon won the ‘best logo’ design and Tara won the ‘best boss’ category.
Have a look through the photos of their day.

We had a fantastic science lesson today by proving that making bread was an irreversible change.
After washing our hands, some of the children weighed or measured out the ingredients in the correct order and added them to the breadmaker. Once this was all completed they had to wait an agonising 5 hours for it to be ready.
We could all smell the bread along the corridor on our way back from the ICT suite and could hardly wait to find out if our careful measuring had been successful.
While we were in assembly Mrs. Choppin cut the bread into chunks and we all got to take a piece home to eat.
Let me know if it was good by leaving a comment against this post. You’ll also earn yourself a house point at the same time!
